Science fiction readers and fans of the Apple TV+ dystopian series Silo can pick up beautiful collectible editions of Hugh Howey’s best-selling novels for cheap right now. The Deluxe Collector’s Editions of the first two books in the author’s Silo series are available for at least 50% off. Wool Deluxe Collector’s Edition is discounted to only $15.19 (was $40), and Shift Deluxe Collector’s Edition is down to $20 (was $40).
The Silo Series had been out of print–and very expensive–in hardcover for years when William Morrow announced the first Collector’s Edition. Published in late 2024, Wool Deluxe Collector’s Edition has sold out multiple times since its release. Shift Deluxe Collector’s Edition launched in September, and the new $20 price is by far the best yet.
Hugh Howey’s Silo Series: Deluxe Collector’s Editions
With Season 3 of Apple’s TV adaptation expected to begin streaming sometime in 2026, now’s a good time to revisit the source material. Seasons 1-2 were based on the first book, Wool, and Season 3 will adapt the events in Shift, which actually takes place before Wool in the story’s timeline. The fourth and final season will be based on Dust, the last book in Howey’s series.
Speaking of Dust, the description for the paperback and Kindle editions currently mentions the upcoming Deluxe Collector’s Edition, so it shouldn’t be long before preorders open. Once it’s listed, you should be able to find Dust Deluxe Collector’s Edition on Amazon’s Silo Series hub page.
$15.19 (was $40)
Each Deluxe Collector’s Edition has new cover art, sprayed edges, and illustrated endpapers. A full topographical map of the silos is printed in color on the inside of the dust jackets. Wool has red sprayed page edges, while Shift makes the shift (sorry) to blue.
Wool has received numerous paperback and hardcover editions since its debut in 2011, but this is easily the best-looking version. It also happens to be the only hardcover edition you can buy for a remotely reasonable price. As such, fans should snag a copy for $15 at Amazon while they can.
This edition of Wool is 592 pages and includes four novellas and the short story titled Holston, which serves as Part 1 of the Silo series. Howey also wrote an original essay for this edition that has behind-the-scenes details about the Apple TV+ series.
Wool Deluxe Collector’s Edition:
- Holston: A short story
- Proper Gauge: A Novella
- Casting Off: A Novella
- The Unraveling: A Novella
- The Stranded: A Novella
- Behind-the-scenes Silo TV essay
$20 (was $40)
The Deluxe Collector’s Edition of Shift has the same features as Wool, just with red sprayed edges. The 608-page hardcover includes the original three novellas from previous editions and an original Silo short story by the author.
The first two seasons remained faithful to Wool while also carving their own path with unique character arcs and plot beats. It’s expected that Season 3 will also differ from Shift in some big ways while maintaining the general story arc from the book.
Shift and Wool are regularly referred to as novels, and they do read like novels, but sections of each book were originally released as novellas. Shift rewinds the clock roughly 200 years and chronicles the apocalypse as well as the creation of the eponymous Silos.
The stories are largely told from the perspective of congressman Donald Keane, who begins working on the Silo project in 2049. Throughout the three novellas, you learn more about E-Day and the global disasters that led to opening of Silo 1 in 2110. The final section in Shift leads into Wool.
Shift Deluxe Collector’s Edition:
- First Shift – Legacy: A Novella
- Second Shift – Order: A Novella
- Third Shift – Pact: A Novella
- An original short story
$33.27 (was $60)
If you don’t don’t care about hardcover editions or stylish flourishes, you can get The Silo Series Box Set for $33.27 (was $60) at Amazon. The slipcased set includes four paperback books: Wool, Shift, Dust, and a slim chapbook of Silo short stories.
In addition to roughly 1,700 pages of awesome science fiction, these editions include some of Howey’s insightful essays.
The three mainline books in the series are also available separately in paperback for $10-$12 each, so you’d spend roughly the same price as you would on the box set. Just keep in mind you’d miss out on the Silo story collection and the display box.
Wool tells the tale of a world struggling to survive. What is left of humanity has been forced to live in an underground silo, as the world above is no longer fit for life. Things grow even more troublesome when the sheriff leaves his post, and a mechanic named Juliette is forced to take his place. What follows is a dramatic sci-fi epic that sees Juliette attempting to unravel a world-altering conspiracy.
Howey originally self-published Wool via Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing program starting in 2011. As mentioned, the book originally reached readers in chunks (novellas), which is reminiscent of serialized novels that were popular in the 1800s by authors such as Charles Dickens. Wool quickly became one of the early massive success stories on the Kindle publishing platform. Traditional publishers took notice, and the first print edition of Wool released in 2012. The continued popularity of the series led to a critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series.
The Silo Series also has an excellent audiobook version performed by Edoardo Ballerini. Audible members can get all three books for around $27, and non-members will wind up paying about $32. A graphic novel adaptation of Wool released in 2014 and is available for only $11.50 (was $19) in paperback.
More Fiction by Hugh Howey
Howey is also the author of multiple standalone novels and the best-selling duology called The Sand Chronicles. We’ve included a list of Howey’s other books beyond the Silo series below:
Check out The Martian Deluxe Edition
Wool wasn’t the only popular sci-fi novel that started as a digital-only serial novel. In 2011, the same year Howey started publishing on KDP, Andy Weir began posting his sci-fi tale The Martian on his personal blog before moving to the Kindle platform. The Martian’s success on Kindle led to a print book deal with Random House imprint Crown. Published in hardcover in 2014, The Martian’s popularity continued to grow. In 2015, Matt Damon starred in the blockbuster feature film adaptation of The Martian directed by Ridley Scott.
Coincidentally, Weir’s debut novel is getting a collectible hardcover edition this spring, and it looks stunning. The Martian Deluxe Edition is available to preorder for $35.42 (was $38) ahead of its May 26 release.
